Latest edition of Rural Connections now available
|
The spring/summer 2018 edition of the ENRD networking magazine ‘Rural Connections’ is now available in English on the ENRD website.
Find out what is being done to welcome and support a new generation of farmers, including through the European Commission’s legislative proposals for the post-2020 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), in our thematic section on Generational Renewal.

A toolkit for rural networks
|
Browse through our interactive online toolkit containing a range of materials – such as good practices, publications and various resources from ENRD events – intended to assist National Rural Network (NRN) support units in achieving their key tasks and objectives.
The toolkit is searchable by NRN objective or task, as well as by operational aspects such as NRN set-up, functioning, and self-assessment.

New ENRD thematic work
|
The ENRD is launching a new topic for its thematic work: ‘Mainstreaming the Bioeconomy’. Activities over the next year will include: meetings of a new Thematic Group (TG) composed of a wide range of stakeholders; analytical work; and a concluding European Seminar.
The overall objective of the thematic work is to encourage the development of sustainable bioeconomy value chains in rural areas in order to promote economic growth and employment whilst preserving eco-systems.

In parallel, the current ENRD focus on the topic of ‘Smart Villages’ will continue, with a dedicated TG working to develop practical orientations for policy makers to enable and support ‘Smart Village’ strategies, while showcasing inspirational examples.

RURAL NEWS FROM THE WESTERN BALKANS
|
First Balkan Rural Parliament
The first ever Balkan Rural Parliament took place on 26-28 June 2018 in Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia, under the heading ‘European perspective of rural communities of the Western Balkans and Turkey’.
The event intended to support regional and inter-sectorial cooperation, promote stakeholder involvement and develop recommendations for sustainable development of rural communities in the countries of the region. It discussed the EU’s Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance in Rural Development (IPARD) and the state-of-play of Local Action Groups (LAGs) in countries of the region.
It was held within the framework of the EU-funded project ‘Active Local Regions for Economic Development of Rural Areas’ (ALTER).

Social innovation in the Western Balkans
|
Explore a selection of good practice examples of social innovation in areas such as healthcare, rural networking and tourism development in Western Balkan rural areas in the latest brochure of the Horizon 2020 project SIMRA.
The highlighted examples explore societal challenges faced in countries of the region and innovative solutions emerging in their rural areas. Explore more good practices on social innovation in SIMRA’s database.

Expanding the reach of LEADER
|
A management system for the LEADER approach and 13 new Local Action Groups (LAGs) were set up in May 2018 in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia following the completion of a bilateral project with Slovenia.
The long-term aim of the project is to improve the socio-economic situation of the population in rural and remote areas in the country and to boost their attractiveness for local and outside investors.

Fostering LEADER Cooperation
|
The 2018 edition of the LEADER-Inspired Network Community: LINC event (12-15 June 2018 – Rauma, Finland) fostered exchange of ideas and practical experiences and promoted Transnational Cooperation (TNC) among Local Action Groups (LAGs) from across Europe.
The event featured a ‘cooperation corner’ hosted by the ENRD Contact Point and the Finnish Rural Network support unit. Browse through the LINC 2018 project proposals and find a cooperation partner.
LINC 2019 will take place on 10-13 September 2019 in Pärnu, Estonia.

Supporting rural youth in Scotland
|
The Scottish Rural Youth Project is working to facilitate the involvement of young people in agricultural and rural activity by better understanding their current situation, aspirations, opportunities and challenges.
The project is conducting research among 18-28 year olds living or working in rural areas in Scotland, the wider UK and Austria, Australia, Canada and the USA to inform policy makers, youth leaders and communities on how to better support and inspire rural youth.

Discover the stories behind EU investment
|
Browse through a set of good practice examples in agriculture and rural development supported by EU funding, including under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), in the investEU database.
The highlighted examples tell people’s stories – ranging from new recruits, farmers, entrepreneurs, to researchers, merchants, artisans, to school children – of concrete benefits, job creation and making a difference locally.

Increasing ecosystem resilience
|
A recent policy brief produced by BiodivERsA – a pan-European network promoting research on biodiversity and ecosystem services – explores measures to increase ecosystem resilience, including key monitoring indicators, tipping points and suggested management strategies.
The brief provides insights and policy recommendations on maintaining the diversity of forest tree species through the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and on further improving Natura 2000 guidance on the management of aquatic bodies.
