Portugal: Expansion of facilities for migrants continues

Portuguese flag

Across Portugal, several recent developments are serving to further expand the already comprehensive support available to migrants and refugees. In the municipality of Odemira, two new spaces were opened on 12 October: a new Immigrant Professional Insertion Office (GIP) and new premises for the Local Support Centre for the Integration of Migrants (CLAIM).

Portugal's network of Immigrant Professional Insertion Offices has been promoting the involvement of civil society entities in migrant integration across the country - through close cooperation with communities at the local level - since 2008. The High Commission for Migration (ACM), the Institute of Employment and Professional Training (IEFP) and the Cooperative Organisation for the Integrated Development of the Municipality of Odemira (TAIPA) all signed an agreement in late 2020 to further develop the network.

Another newly-established CLAIM is to begin activities on 19 November. This facility has been set up at the University of Porto, one of the largest universities in Portugal and one which has a high number of international students. Individuals making use of this centre can therefore benefit from close proximity to other migrants and to university-centred opportunities for networking and social inclusion.
