Poland: Funding from the EC to support those arriving from Ukraine

Flag of Poland

Poland has received EUR 144.6 million (almost PLN 700 million) from the European Commission (EC) to help those fleeing Ukraine as a result of its war with Russia. This is the first tranche of funds distributed by the EC through its emergency assistance mechanism, and represents almost 60% of the total sum (EUR 248 million) allocated to those countries receiving the largest numbers of refugees from Ukraine. Other countries included in this group are Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

The funds come from the EC's Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and the Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy. They will partly contribute to the Polish government’s fund for the provision of aid to refugees arriving from Ukraine, as well as to strengthening border infrastructure at the external border of the European Union (EU).

The Polish government gave a statement of appreciation upon receiving the funds, and also highlighted the necessity of further funding to more effectively meet the needs of high numbers of new arrivals. According to UNHCR data, nearly 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine have registered in Poland since the conflict began in February 2022.
