Italy provides €200 bonuses to qualifying workers, including migrants

Flag of Italy

In May 2022, the Italian government adopted legislation to provide one-off allowances of €200 for many categories of employees, including seasonal and domestic workers. The DL 50/2022 law allows migrant workers to apply for the bonus, as long as they were residing in Italy before the 1 July 2022 and all income requirements are met.

The measure is likely to impact many third-country nationals (TCNs): according to data collected by Italy's National Social Security Institute (INPS), the majority of workers in the domestic sector are foreigners. In 2021, there were 961 358 domestic workers registered with the INPS, an increase of 1.9% compared to 2020. Foreign workers account for 70% of the total, with their number growing by 3.2% in the last year too.

Unlike other categories, domestic workers can apply for the bonus directly on the INPS portal by 30 September 2022. Practical information on how to submit the application is available in Italian in INPS Circular n. 73/2022.
