EU concerned about asylum seekers’ living conditions in Greece during coronavirus pandemic
The EU has asked Greece to move migrants who are most vulnerable to coronavirus from overcrowded camps on its islands. The EU’s Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said the most vulnerable groups could be moved to other areas on the islands.
According to the European Commission, the camps house about 42,000 people. Greece has imposed restrictions on the movement of people living in the camps.
Human Rights Watch has condemned the conditions that those living in the camps face, calling the conditions ‘deplorable’ and arguing that ‘forcing asylum seekers to remain in conditions that violate their rights and are harmful to their well-being, health, and dignity cannot be justified on grounds of public health’.
The EU has promised to take in 1,600 unaccompanied children from the camps.
