Czech Republic: 2021 census to begin in March

A new census will be conducted in the Czech Republic this year; the tenth since the formation of Czechoslovakia in 1918. The officially named '2021 Census' will begin at midnight on March 26–27, and completion can be completely contactless, via the internet, or by filling out a paper form. The results of the census will be available at the turn of 2021 and 2022.

Online enumeration

The electronic census form will be available from 27 March to 9 April 2021. Anyone can enumerate him/herself online using the census website or the mobile application, which can be downloaded from Google Play or the App Store under the name "Census21". Those who do not enumerate themselves online will be required to fill out a paper form.

Paper census

In cases where online enumeration cannot be carried out, a person is obliged to fill out a paper census form between 17 April and 11 May 2021. The census form - together with an envelope - will be distributed by a census enumerator, who will then return on a pre-announced date to collect the completed form. The form and envelope can also be picked up at any census contact point at selected branches of the Czech Post and regional administrations of the Czech Statistical Office. The completed form can also be submitted (no later than 11 May) at a post office or via a mailbox. The envelope with the census 2021 logo has a pre-printed address and postage is free of charge.

Who is affected by the census?

Everyone who is registered as staying in the Czech Republic for more than 90 days, has been granted asylum or lives in the Czech Republic at the 'decisive moment' of midnight, March 26-27, 2021, must be counted. It does not matter where a person lives in the world, what his/her citizenship is or where he/she is registered to stay abroad at that time.

Everyone who is present in Czech territory at the decisive moment is counted, unless they are a diplomat or tourist who is present only for a short time (fewer than 90 days).

Information on the census in foreign languages

Detailed census information is available online in eight languages: CzechEnglish, German, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and Romani.
