Bulgarian Red Cross is coordinating a new housing project for refugees (Unofficial translation)
The State Agency for Refugees (SAR) and The Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) have signed an agreement that BRC will carry out the 'Transfer of beneficiaries of international protection from the reception centres to external addresses', part of a project funded by the European Commission under the grant for emergency measures to deal with the country's unprecedented migration pressure. BRC will pay monthly rent for the accommodation of recognised refugees residing at the time in the territorial units of SAR who are not able to afford to pay rent for an external apartment/room/house/floor.
Three coordinators of the project have been hired - two for Sofia and one for Harmanli/Haskovo. They are currently contacting potential landlords and - with the assistance of SAR and social workers - refugees willing to live outside the reception centres.
"This project is very important because even in the absence of national integration programme it still gives a chance and opportunity for refugees to integrate in Bulgaria, study the language and look for a job", Mariana Stoyanova, Head of Refugee and Migration Service at the Bulgarian Red Cross said.
Besides the signed agreement а detailed mechanism for interaction between SAR and BRC is currently being developed. The activities under the agreement shall continue until June 15, 2016.
