EU funds for migrant integration in the 2021-2027 period
EU funds are regulated by the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) which defines the implementation of EU budget over seven-year periods. With the new 2021 – 2027 programme and funding period approaching, the European Commission announced proposals for the future of EU funding in spring 2018. EWSI summarises the key changes in integration funding proposed by the EC below and keeps track of how the negotiations over them develop.
The restructuring of funds is crucial to the future of integration across the EU, especially as EU funds remain the only resources available for integration initiatives and policies in some of the Member States. In the future, funds will be streamlined and integration support will draw on a variety of funds to a much larger extent than today. In addition, the partnership principle for the involvement of regional and local authorities and civil society in programme planning and implementation will be reinforced. Negotiations on the proposals of the Commission are ongoing, with the new European Parliament and Member States expected to agree on the new framework in 2020.
