All Immigration Is Local

A new report from the Social Market Foundation has set out how better data could support UK local authorities in the development of integration strategies. The report entitled 'All Immigration Is local' highlights a number of areas in which policy and practice could be improved, including:

  • How better data could help local authorities plan for the needs of the whole population and view migrants as part of this population (rather than simply as a problem to manage)
  • How the Controlling Migration Fund could better match resources to population pressures on a more accurate and timely basis
  • How businesses and employers could take a more proactive role in supporting integration, following the model of New American Economy organisation and the Welcoming America programmes in the United States
  • How Strategic Migration Partnerships could provide a mechanism to ensure that the local voice is heard at the national level and ensure that migration policy focuses more on integration
