Strengthening the system of protection of migrants and refugees in Bulgaria
In a report, published on 23 April 2018 by the Council of Europe, the Special Representative of the Secretary General on migration and refugees, Tomáš Boček, recognises the efforts made by Bulgaria to cope with the challenges brought by the high number of arrivals of migrants and refugees. But the report also highlights concerns about refugee integration in the country.
“Bulgaria has made significant progress in enrolling refugee children in schools; however, the social inclusion of migrants and refugees in local communities is slow due to the fact that municipalities’ responsibilities are not mandatory and there is a generally negative public attitude towards migrants and refugees”, the Special Representative said.
The report further focuses on the following integration topics:
- Integration strategies and policies
- Access to the labour market
- Public attitudes towards migrants and refugees
