The 2021 Festival des Libertés will take place from 21 - 31 October at the Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles.
Organised by Bruxelles Laïque, the annual festival seeks to mobilise all forms of artistic expression in order to offer an overview of the state of rights and freedoms around the world. Focus is placed upon the promotion of civil rights and liberties, and on representing citizens. The theme of the festival this year is Trust, Mistrust, and Surveillance.
The multilingual festival uniquely brings together numerous artists from over a dozen countries, such as Nigeria, Syria, and Armenia, highlighting the multiculturalism of Brussels itself. There will be film showings, debates, plays, exhibitions, and concerts, including a concert by The Forbidden Strings, a rock group of Afghan migrants; a showing of Shadow Game, a film about migrants arriving in Europe; and an exhibition by Bernat Armangué which focuses on migrants’ rights.
Through the diversity of the artists involved, the integration of migrants in the European cultural landscape is promoted and advanced.
The festival will be accessible in French, Dutch, English and Spanish, although the language combination will vary across events. A Covid Safe Ticket is required for attendance.
