Increasing the awareness of authorities and the general public on a range of issues surrounding violence against women and children through a regular series on radio.
The project 'Broadcasts against violence against women and children' (Tous en ondes contre la violence envers les femmes et les enfants), aimed to develop an editorial line in several languages (French, German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Bulgarian and Arabic) on violence against women and children. In collaboration with the French Committee for UNICEF and Coordination Sud, RFI produced a series of programmes covering various forms of violence in their sociological and cultural contexts, ranging from physical to psychological violence.
The final objective was to increase awareness on the problems of violence by creating for the listeners a regular appointment on the air. It allowed free expression to people who do not usually have the opportunity to be heard in the media.
The lead organisation made two important conclusions in the final project report: First, that it would be ideal to be able to follow up this intensive series, a year later, to be able to report on the outcomes of the stories covered. For example, in one case that a journalist was able to follow, it was seen that cooperation between the countries of origin and destination of some women trafficked into prostitution was slow and hindered their achieving their rights. Second, RFI noted that an important result of the project was the good links it made with grassroots organisations who helped with information and contacts; the journalists look upon these organisations as useful informants for future broadcasts.
