The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
The JRC Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), located in Geel, Belgium is equipped with a unique scientific infrastructure for highly accurate neutron cross-section measurements. It is a combination of two accelerator facilities: a 150 MeV linear electron accelerator, GELINA, and a 7 MV light-ion Van de Graaff accelerator.
Among the pulsed white spectrum neutron sources available in the world, the linear electron accelerator facility at IRMM (Gelina) is the one with the best time resolution. This facility is ideally suited for training of young students in nuclear data measurement techniques.
ESARDA, the European Safeguards Research and Development Association, is comprised of European organisations actively involved in the Research and Development of Nuclear Safeguards. The ESARDA network includes national regulatory authorities, operators of nuclear facilities, and research centres and universities.
ESARDA's main objective is to assist the European safeguards community with the advancement of safeguards, enhancing the efficiency of systems and measures, as well as investigating how new techniques can be developed and implemented.
EUFRAT offers to external users researchers from the Member states and 3rd countries experimental possibilities at the JRC-IRMM nuclear facilities: the neutron time-of-flight facility GELINA, the Van de Graaff accelerator, the radionuclide metrology laboratories and the underground laboratory HADES.
Euromaster programme, "Measurement Science in Chemistry", is offered by a consortium of nine European universities. It provides advanced training to students pursuing a career in analytical sciences.

Neutron-induced nuclear reactions are important in a wide range of applications ranging from stellar nucleosynthesis, symmetry breaking effects in compound nuclei, the investigation of nuclear level densities, to applications of nuclear technology, including the transmutation of nuclear waste, accelerator driven systems and nuclear fuel cycle investigations. Accurate measurements and a careful analysis of measured nuclear data are the crucial basis for evaluated nuclear data libraries, which in their turn form the basis for technological applications.
The JRC is organising training workshops with worked examples in order to transfer background knowledge and expertise of Eurocode writers to potential trainers at national level and to Eurocode users. The workshops and related training material contribute to a consistent implementation and use of the Eurocodes and facilitate training within the Member States.
