The JRC contributed as expert proficiency test (PT) provider to discussions related to current practices and future directions on external quality assessment (EQA).

As shown by the JRC since 20 years already, the reporting of results together with their uncertainties by PT participants and subsequent evaluation by the PT/EQA provider are the most effective measures to demonstrate good laboratory performance.

A recent article co-authored by the JRC finds significant differences between the performance of Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 data for mapping areas of forest disturbances in the Brazilian Amazon.

The authors analysed a time series of images from both satellites to map selective logging activities in seven legally authorised timber harvesting sites in 2016 and 2017, and compared the results.

Yesterday evening, the University of Strasbourg, coolDC and Datacenter.com received the 2019 EU Code of Conduct Award for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres during the Datacloud Congress in Monte Carlo, one of the largest conferences dedicated to data centres in Europe.

The Code of Conduct is an independent scheme in the EU to certify that a data centre has adopted energy efficiency best practices.

TOM DE GROEVE, Ph. D., is Deputy Head of the Disaster Risk Management Unit at the European Commission Joint Research Centre.

He does research in risk management, disaster monitoring and emergency management systems in support of EU and global policy related to disaster risk management and climate change adaptation.
