Eastern and Southern Europeans feel lonelier and are more socially isolated than Western and Northern Europeans.

As part of a multi-year research project to analyse different aspects of social fairness, JRC researchers have analysed the incidence and the determinants of loneliness across Europe.

Lonely people are often stigmatised. They are more likely to have poor health and poor cognitive performance, mental problems and pessimistic views. They feel more easily threatened in daily life situations.

A joint KU Leuven and JRC scientific paper proposes a new robust ease of Disassembly Metric (eDiM) to calculate the disassembly time of products for repair, reuse and component harvesting.

By categorising disassembly tasks in six categories, this method provides insights on which disassembly tasks are the most time consuming and how the product design could be improved.

From 2019, all heavy vehicles must be equipped with new Smart Tachograph
From 2019, all heavy vehicles must be equipped with new Smart Tachograph
Jun 14 2019

From 15 June 2019, all heavy vehicles newly registered in the EU must have a smart tachograph on board.

These devices help fight fatigue and speeding, the most common causes of accidents, by allowing authorities to check vehicles without stopping them.

Their reliable operation depends on technical specifications and infrastructure designed and put in place by the European Commission's science and knowledge service, the Joint Research Centre.

Smart tachographs track and record the driving and resting times of professional drivers.

Human activities exposes us to ever more frequent extreme events such as:

  • power black-outs
  • droughts
  • extended floods

This poses challenges to energy sustainability and actions to tackle climate change through renewable energies.

The workshop on extreme events and energy transitions aims at exploring how enable important advancements in this area by

A perfect storm of new technologies and new business models is transforming not only our vehicles.

It will transform everything about how we get around, and how we live our lives.

The launch event aims to bring together policymakers, academia and the private sector to discuss the report's insights and its implications for EU policy.

A perfect storm of new technologies and new business models is transforming our vehicles, how we get around, our way of life.

Smartphone apps put cabs, shared cars, bikes and scooters at our fingertips. We move to look at transport as a flexible service, not as a long term commitment to one transport option.

Shared electric bikes and scooters make public transport more accessible. They shrink the 'last mile' between public transport and our homes or workplaces.
