JRC scientists – in close collaboration with the Universities of Milan and Florence in Italy – investigated the relationship between increasing concentrations of two carcinogens, namely nickel chloride and benzopyrene, and specific features of cell transformation assays (CTAs).

This work paves the way for improved exploitation of CTAs for carcinogenicity testing.

The JRC participated along with other international experts in the review of current approaches for acute systemic toxicity testing.

To facilitate the use of alternative methods and their regulatory acceptance it is important to keep the momentum for data curation and sharing, education and training for users and regulators, and international harmonisation of testing requirements.

JRC scientists reviewed the recent activities and achievements in the area of genotoxicity testing with the conclusion that the availability of improved tests and strategies can significantly contribute to the reduction and potential replacement of animals used for regulatory testing.

The JRC's EURL ECVAM has launched a validation study to assess in vitro methods for the detection of chemicals which disrupt thyroid function.

There is global concern about substances, natural and man-made, which have the potential to interfere with the endocrine system.

The thyroid’s main role in the endocrine system is to regulate metabolism through the action of thyroid hormone, by extracting iodine from the blood and incorporating it into thyroid hormones.

JRC scientists have published a written protocol, accompanied by a video demonstration for the differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into neurons and glia.

This new tool should increase reproducibility in laboratory procedures through visual learning.

The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) has responded to a universally experienced problem within the world of biomedical science to reproduce the results of other labs (today only 10-30% of published scientific articles can be successfully reproduced).
