Call for laboratories to participate in proficiency tests on microplastics in drinking water and sediments

The JRC, together with the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), is launching a call for expert laboratories, to participate in the proficiency tests on specific microplastics in water (bottled water, drinking water) and polyethylene in sediments.

Background

Microplastics and possibly also nanoplastics, are becoming widely spread throughout the environment. 

Concerns are growing that they may present a risk to the environment and human health via contamination of water, food, soil and air.

Over the years, the JRC has become a strategic partner in the international fight against new psychoactive substances, a growing concern in the European Union.

The JRC has been invited this week to share its expertise in the area of identifying new psychoactive substances on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the IUPAC, the International Union of Pure and Applied chemistry.

We take stock of JRC work concerning New Psychoactive Substances (NPS).

The JRC developed and in-house validated an analytical method for the accurate determination of eight pesticides in soybeans

JRC scientists developed and validated a high accuracy method for the determination of eight pesticides in soybeans.

The method could also be used for the reliable quantification of these pesticides in other food products.

Soybean is a high source of protein, lipid, vitamin and minerals. That is why it is mainly used as food and feed as well as for industrial and technical applications for example, in cosmetics, textiles or biofuels. The EU is the second largest importer of soybean in the world.

JRC scientists, in collaboration with scientists from two National Metrology Institutions, have succeeded for the first time to link nanoparticle size results, measured by disc centrifugal liquid sedimentation, to the International System of Units (SI) of length, the metre. This makes the measurements of nanoparticles more accurate.

In close collaboration with clinical scientists from the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, the JRC developed a new certified reference material (CRM) consisting of specific autoantibodies for the diagnosis of small vessel-associated vasculitis.

This CRM ensures accurate results of measurements independently of the test assay used in the clinical laboratory.
