It was estimated that over 115,000 patients, in Europe, were newly diagnosed with cancers of the kidney, renal pelvis and the ureter in 2012. In the same year it was estimated nearly 49,000 Europeans died from kidney cancer (KC), accounting for 3.2% of all cancer deaths in Europe.

Forests play a key role in meeting the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement. They cover around 25% of the global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions planned by countries for 2030 in response to the Paris Agreement. In an article published in Nature Climate Change, JRC scientists call for robust, transparent and credible data to track the real mitigation potential of forests, and highlight the important role of the scientific community in this process.

The JRC has developed a smartphone app that will help citizens to capture and share information about 37 invasive alien species of Union concern in Europe. The 'Invasive Alien Species Europe' app, which contains detailed information and photos of those plants and animals, makes it possible for citizens to use their phones' GPS system and camera to capture images of them.
