Eutrophication and its detrimental effects on coastal ecosystems is one of the biggest issues in many regions of the world. Human activities and climatic change are the most important drivers of eutrophication, leading to harmful algal blooms and the proliferation of hypoxic conditions in many coastal ecosystems.
A scientific-technical workshop organised by the JRC and the AGRHYMET Regional Centre was held in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) from 19-23 September 2017 with the technical services of the national ministries (Agriculture and Hydrology) and meteorological services of Burkina Faso, Benin and Niger - the three countries involved in the MEKROU project.

In a new publication in Science of The Total Environment, JRC and leading global scientists in the field of water management identify 7 essential elements that should be considered in a water stress indicator. Although the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 6.4.2 on water stress considers these 7 elements, the authors point out that there is need for improvement, and give clear recommendations to address this need.
