The Environmental Marine Information System (EMIS) is a geo-portal application that provides access to spatial, temporal, physical and biological marine variables, and related environmental information, derived from satellite remote sensing and/or numerical modelling.
With its associated geographic services (map display, analysis tool, web services, discovery tool, etc.), EMIS supports the assessment and the monitoring of the European regional seas.
EMIS facilitates the implementation of EU environmental policies, providing consistent and accurate bio-physical data / indicators to assess, for example, some of the descriptors for Good Environmental Status as defined in Annex 1 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (More info: mcc.jrc.ec.europa.eu).

GIS functionalities and statistical analysis
EMIS provides basic navigation and interrogation tools with a range of time-series and statistical analysis generated automatically in a format ready for reporting, and enabling decision makers to make full and lasting use of this information.
OGC web services
For visualisation of spatial data and to ensure full interoperability, EMIS provides Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Service (WMS) 1.1 and 1.3 as well as WMS-Time. Raster-based download services are offered as direct Netcdf downloads or using the OGC’s Web Coverage Service (WCS-Time), and Web Coverage Services (WCS) are set up as INSPIRE view and download services.

An OGC’s catalogue Service for the Web (CSW) is available as a standard end-point (version 2.0.2) by the JRC Data Portal.
