We are doing science for policy
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
The Blue Hub is the JRC in-house platform to perform research in the fields of maritime surveillance and Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA). The Blue Hub platform integrates vessel positioning data, contextual information and satellite based imagery to track some 160.000 vessels in real-time.
The Blue Hub activities range from research and development to the implementation of innovative algorithms into pre-operational MSA decision support tools for operational authorities and policy makers. Once value and technological readiness are demonstrated, the innovative methods are transferred into the platform for further testing and validation through campaigns and pilot exercises.
The Blue Hub research activities demand for a holistic approach to maritime surveillance, entailing a wide spectrum of disciplines such as data fusion, machine learning, knowledge discovery and geomatics. The main Blue Hub research areas are data fusion and target tracking, knowledge discovery, tracks reconstruction/prediction, and anomaly detection.
