On Monday 11 July 2011, the fourth 'Measurement Science in Chemistry' International Summer School started in Poznań, Poland. In this edition, 43 students from thirteen countries participated from Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, France, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Uganda and Ukraine.

JRC published a paper that criticises the Ecological Footprint in the prestigious journal Ecological Indicators.
 
The main conclusions of JRC study are that:
  • The EF is inconsistent with its stated purpose of measuring demand on ecosystems.

In its role as photovoltaic reference laboratory, the JRC's European Solar Test Installation (ESTI) has developed significant knowledge in the measurement determination and traceability of solar spectral measurements which can be exploited by many other institutes in Europe.

As part of its role to disseminate and manage knowledge, ESTI, since 2011, has coordinated and provided the scientific guidance to a European inter-laboratory group to develop and expand the knowledge base of fundamental solar measurements.

The Border Monitoring Working Group (BMWG - JRC-IAEA-USA Nuclear Security Collaboration) celebrated its 10 years anniversary on the 2nd-3rd of December in Brussels hosted by the European Commission Joint Research Centre.

This year, TrainMiC® celebrates its 10th anniversary. To celebrate this, a competition was organised amongst the national teams for designing an anniversary logo. An e-vote was organised and the team from Bosnia and Herzegovina won the competition.

The 10th ESARDA course has been successfully organised and hosted by the Nuclear Security Unit (ITU Ispra) from the 18th until the 22nd of March. The annual course has been conducted at JRC Ispra since 2005, featuring a full five-day program with lectures delivered by worldwide experts in the field of Nuclear Safeguards and Non-Proliferation.

On 20 December 2013, the 68th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted a resolution which declared 2015 the first ever International Year of Soils (IYS).

The IYS 2015 aims to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions. It was officially launched on 5 December 2014, the first official UN World Soil Day.

The 2018 Scientific Meeting of the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR) was organised by the JRC and the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen at the end of September. The conference hosted welcomed 150 participants from 22 European countries for four keynote lectures and seven sessions.

The main theme, Data Linkages and Cancer Registries, was discussed from various perspectives, including the integration of clinical databases and biobanks with cancer registries, data linkage methods, and estimation of cancer burden.
