The European Parliament today voted in a new set of EU rules that will ensure protection of European farmers and small and mid-range suppliers against unfair trading practices in the food supply chain.

The new European law will cover agricultural and food products traded in the food supply chain, banning for the first time up to 16 unfair trading practices imposed unilaterally by one trading partner on another.

A recently published JRC report provides a quantitative assessment of policy options for the agricultural sector in the second phase of the Emerging Senegal Plan (ESP) and corresponding Priority Action Plan (PAP), which covers the period 2019-2023.

The EU Agricultural Outlook for markets and income 2018-2030, published on Thursday, 6 December 2018, presents the EU's annual projections for agricultural commodity markets to 2030, highlighting the importance of technological innovation and the increasing demand for organic products in the EU.

Compiled by the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI), the EU Agricultural Outlook presents the likely developments of the major EU agricultural commodity markets and agricultural income until 2030.

A recently published JRC report assesses policy options to support the new Agriculture Sector Growth and Transformation Strategy (ASGTS) in Kenya. The report also gives an analysis of the food value chain and some policy recommendations on how to pursue agricultural transformation.  The report was prepared in cooperation with colleagues from the Food and Agriculture Organization's Monitoring and Analysing Food and Agricultural Policies (FAO-MAFAP).

The Short-term outlook for EU agricultural markets in 2018 and 2019, which presents the outlook for 2018-2019 for arable crops and meat and dairy markets in the EU, was published by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture today.

The report shows that EU cereal production is making a recovery, increasing by 10mt from 2016 to 2017. Oilseed production is expected to increase. Rapeseed is expected to increase by 9% over 2016-2017 levels.

The JRC has recently published a Science-for-Policy report that quantitatively assesses biomass production, supply, uses and flows in the European Union (EU), and outlines a methodological framework to assess the environmental impacts of biomass supply chains.

Biomass is organic material that comes from plants and animals. It is the basis of the bioeconomy, which "comprises those parts of the economy that use renewable biological resources from land and sea – such as crops, forests, fish, animals and micro-organisms – to produce food, materials and energy"*.
