We are doing science for policy
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
ERM®-BC717, which was previously certified for the mass fraction of the Fusarium mycotoxin zearalenone (ZON), has been additionally certified for the mass fractions of two other Fusarium mycotoxins – deoxynivalenol (DON) and nivalenol (NIV), which frequently co-occur with ZON.
It was produced from naturally contaminated maize with a content of ZON and DON corresponding to approximately 80 % and 40% of the maximum permitted levels for these mycotoxins in maize and maize derived products (Regulation (EC) 1881/2006), respectively. Currently there are no maximum levels for NIV, therefore this material will help to develop reliable methods for its detection in maize and will support future developments of the European legislation related to mycotoxins in food and feed. Production, homogeneity, stability and the certification of the mass fractions of the mentioned mycotoxins was performed according to ISO Guides 34 and 35.
