A global approach towards alternatives to animal testing

Nov 17 2015

Members of the International Cooperation on Alternative Test Methods attended a two-day meeting hosted by the European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) on 10-11 November 2015 at the JRC's Ispra site. Representatives from organisations involved in method validation discussed a variety of topics including; on-going cooperation in validation studies; activities at the OECD concerning test guideline development; the differences in toxicological hazard information requirements across sectors and jurisdictions; and how to better engage the international regulatory community towards better understanding and acceptance of alternative methods.

ICATM partners reaffirmed their commitment to work together in a concerted effort to accelerate progress in the development, validation and acceptance of alternative methods to animal testing.

Established in 2009, this international group includes representatives from South Korea (KoCVAM), the United States of America (ICCVAM and NICEATM), Japan (JaCVAM), Canada (Health Canada) and the European Union. Organisations working on alternative methods from Brazil and China participated this year as observers which brings valuable opportunities for extending the international reach of ICATM and facilitating knowledge sharing across the globe.
