The JRC carries out research in a wide variety of fields. Located across five sites throughout the EU, seven research institutes work in the areas of agriculture and food security, energy and transport, environment and climate change, health and consumer protection, information society, safety and security, innovation and growth, measurements and standards, and nuclear safety and security.
The JRC is carrying out research to assess new and emerging information and communication technologies (ICT) in respect to their impact and associated risks for the European citizen, with the aim to identify ways and measures to protect the citizen against cyber-related threats. This includes data breach exercises, privacy by design technologies, RFID deactivation, and data protection for smart metering systems.
The JRC uses space technologies to address disaster risk reduction and to support the response and reconstruction phase after a disaster.
The Eurocodes are standards for the construction sector which aim to increase the safety of buildings in the face of natural and man-made hazards. The JRC supports their design, monitors their implementation and contributes to organising practical workshops, important for their implementation.
The EU is the largest provider of external aid in the world. It is therefore essential that information on aid funding by various donors is easily available and comparable. The JRC has developed EU Aid Explorer, a web based tool that facilitates the sharing of aid funding data from multiple sources.
The JRC supports EU member state authorities in evaluating, analysing and preparing for the risks posed by chemical or industrial accidents triggered by natural disasters (Natechs). The support includes the management of a database of these accidents as well as the development of a mapping tool that allows authorities to more accurately identify Natech-prone areas.
The JRC is supporting the EU transport safety policy in all transport modes: road, aviation, maritime and rail. Research activities include the development and management of accidents and incidents reporting systems for the aviation, maritime and railways domains, assuring the security and trustworthiness of the digital tachograph, developing innovative radar systems for maritime surveillance and safety and innovative solutions to enhance the security of containers.
