JRC research topics

The JRC carries out research in a wide variety of fields. Located across five sites throughout the EU, seven research institutes work in the areas of agriculture and food security, energy and transport, environment and climate change, health and consumer protection, information society, safety and security, innovation and growth, measurements and standards, and nuclear safety and security.

  1. Cybersecurity research at the JRC provides support to the EU to respond to cyber-attacks and reinforce rules on personal data protection, as well as to ensure that critical networked systems are sufficiently secure and resilient.

  2. The JRC provides technical support for the creation of a common information sharing system, jointly developed by the Commission and EU national authorities, in order to harmonise data on maritime surveillance.

  3. The JRC’s work in the field of drought and desertification includes the evaluation of land degradation, regionally as well as globally, meteorological drought forecasting and assessment of the water supply throughout Europe.

Digital Earth is a concept of an interactive digital replica of the entire planet that can facilitate a shared understanding of the multiple relationships between the physical and natural environments and society. To do so, it needs to be accessible globally from multiple platforms (mobiles, tablets, computers); be able to display information in ways that are easily understood by multiple audiences (the public, decision-makers, scientists); and be constantly updated with data coming from sensors (space-based, airborne, in-situ), citizens, and both public and private sectors.

  5. JRC research involves the Digital Economy research programme, which was started in January 2012 to address some of the most important economic issues linked to digital information technology.

  6. Based on their enabling characteristics, ICTs permit all sectors in society to influence the way we live, work and behave. With citizens becoming active participants in the European Knowledge Society and thus being able to consume and produce digital content, the market for content needs to become open to innovation and new actors.

  7. The JRC carries out extensive work to improve the scientific evidence base for risk assessment in Europe and worldwide, not only in hazard characterisation, but also in vulnerability and exposure assessment and development of guidelines and standards for risk data.

  8. The JRC’s expertise in remote sensing technologies allows for the monitoring of physical, chemical and biological systems of the Earth, to support crisis management and better maritime awareness.

  10. The JRC supports efforts to reduce the human casualties and economic and societal impacts of earthquakes and tsunamis. Studies are done on methodologies to increase the safety of buildings, namely with the creation of European standards for construction, while a tsunami modelling system allows the estimation of tsunami wave height and travel time.
