The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
The European Clearinghouse initiative on Nuclear Power Plants Operational Experience Feedback (“EU Clearinghouse”) has been set up in support of EU nuclear safety authorities, EU technical support organisations, international organisations and the broader nuclear community. Its purpose is to enhance nuclear safety through the lessons learned from operational experience.
JRC carries out a significant amount of research, and provides the EU with support in the area of illicit trafficking of nuclear including prevention, detection and response actions to illicit trafficking.
The JRC has developed the European Community Urgent Radiological Information Exchange (ECURIE) system and the automatic European Radiological Data Exchange Platform (EURDEP) to support efforts in the area of nuclear emergency support.
The JRC are experts in emergency information exchange, including in the area of nuclear science which is important to rapidly and accurately interpret and evaluate the consequences of the results being measured.
EHRO-N was established in 2011, in the framework of the EURATOM treaty, to determine the situation of nuclear-educated Human Resources, skills and competences in Europe, assess the trends and suggest policy options for improvement.
Actinides have many possible applications in various strategic fields, but because of their radio-toxicity, it is necessary to carry out reliable safety assessments of their behaviour. This research is carried out at the JRC in collaboration with a number of academic partners worldwide.
The JRC carries out research in the area of targeted alpha therapy (also called Alpha-Immunotherapy), which is a new approach to cancer treatment.
The JRC organises interlaboratory comparisons for conformity assessment for the IAEA Network of Analytical Laboratories (NWAL) and other laboratories in the field. These quality control programmes are under the accredited aim at the analysis of uranium and plutonium containing materials and nuclear signatures in the environment.
Radiation occurs naturally in the environment and in order to monitor this activity, the JRC collects and validates environmental radioactivity data from natural origin.
JRC carries out analysis of proliferation concerns by combining nuclear fuel cycle expertise with export control and trade analysis.
