JRC research topics

The JRC carries out research in a wide variety of fields. Located across five sites throughout the EU, seven research institutes work in the areas of agriculture and food security, energy and transport, environment and climate change, health and consumer protection, information society, safety and security, innovation and growth, measurements and standards, and nuclear safety and security.

  1. Sustainability science is a solution-oriented discipline that studies the complex relationship between nature and humankind, conciliating the mutually influenced scientific and social reference paradigms, and covering multi-temporal and spatial scales. The discipline takes a holistic approach so as to capitalise on and integrate sectorial knowledge, methodologies and a variety of epistemic and normative stances towards defining solutions.

  2. The JRC evaluates the effectiveness of climate policies, focusing on cost-analysis and environmental impact. It also specifically addresses the sustainability of biofuels and assists the Covenant of Mayors initiative, which brings together local and regional European authorities willing to increase their energy efficiency and promote use of renewable energies.
