The JRC carries out research in a wide variety of fields. Located across five sites throughout the EU, seven research institutes work in the areas of agriculture and food security, energy and transport, environment and climate change, health and consumer protection, information society, safety and security, innovation and growth, measurements and standards, and nuclear safety and security.
The JRC has developed and manages the European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting Systems, ECCAIRS for the collection and exchange of accident and incident information in the aviation domain.
In the fields of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) hazards, and explosives detection, the JRC provides scientific/technical support to Commission services on measurement and standardisation, based on specific expertise in measurement and testing - in chemistry, physics, analytical sciences, measurement technologies and standardisation.
Crisis management research at the JRC includes the development of crisis management technologies, satellite image processing and analysis and internet surveillance systems to support the EU's capacity to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters.
Critical infrastructures include power grids, the transport network and information and communication systems. Protection of these infrastructures is vital for the security of the EU and the well-being of its citizens.
Cybersecurity research at the JRC provides support to the EU to respond to cyber-attacks and reinforce rules on personal data protection, as well as to ensure that critical networked systems are sufficiently secure and resilient.
The JRC carries out extensive work to improve the scientific evidence base for risk assessment in Europe and worldwide, not only in hazard characterisation, but also in vulnerability and exposure assessment and development of guidelines and standards for risk data.
The JRC supports efforts to reduce the human casualties and economic and societal impacts of earthquakes and tsunamis. Studies are done on methodologies to increase the safety of buildings, namely with the creation of European standards for construction, while a tsunami modelling system allows the estimation of tsunami wave height and travel time.
The Global Health Security Initiative is an international partnership of the G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States), Mexico, the European Commission and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to strengthen health preparedness and the global response to threats of CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) substances and pandemic influenza.
