JRC research topics

The JRC carries out research in a wide variety of fields. Located across five sites throughout the EU, seven research institutes work in the areas of agriculture and food security, energy and transport, environment and climate change, health and consumer protection, information society, safety and security, innovation and growth, measurements and standards, and nuclear safety and security.

  1. The JRC establishes best environmental management practices (BEMPs) of organisations in order to produce Sectoral Reference Documents (SRDs) which are then used by industry and organisations and helps the implementation of the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).

  2. The JRC’s expertise in the area of composite indicators enable it to supply evidence-based assessment of EU policies and monitor their progress.

  3. The JRC's research on counterfactual impact evaluation provides essential insights into whether policy objectives are met and also looks at the resource efficiency of policy, particularly in the areas of employment and economics.

  6. Under different sustainable production and consumption policy strategies of the EU, the JRC provides crucial support by analysing the economic, social and environmental variables. This support also includes the construction of databases and development of an econometric model for input-output analysis.

  7. Research and innovation are crucial in bringing about a return to competitiveness for Europe. More than simply overcoming the current crisis, the European Commission is committed to building a stable economy for the future based on smart sustainable growth. Europe 2020, the EU's growth and jobs strategy, aims to do just that.

  8. JRC research on nanotechnology is contributing to the reduction of uncertainties about the potential impact of nanomaterials on health and the environment and is supporting the development of a sound regulatory framework by providing informed science-based advice.

In order to support he EU’s regional policy, aiming to reduce disparities between different European regions, the JRC is developing a model that takes into account a variety of economic and social dimensions of regions such as sectors of the economy, labour market and capital requirement factors as well as government tax-collection process.

  10. The JRC supports the development of the Innovation Union, as part of ensuring "smart growth" in the EU. Innovation Union policies must be based on robust analyses of up-to-date, reliable information, taking into consideration the interrelation between research, innovation and higher education policies: the 'knowledge triangle'.
