Hydrogen is the simplest and lightest gas in the universe. It is not a primary energy source, such as coal or gas, but it is an energy carrier (similar to electricity) and can store and deliver energy in a widely usable form. It also has important environmental and energy security advantages. When renewable energy is used for its production, or when the CO2 is captured, the hydrogen chain (from production to end-use) is completely emission-free. The JRC investigates the safety and storage aspects related to the deployment of hydrogen technologies and evaluates these in the best interest of Europe’s citizens.
