JRC research topics

The JRC carries out research in a wide variety of fields. Located across five sites throughout the EU, seven research institutes work in the areas of agriculture and food security, energy and transport, environment and climate change, health and consumer protection, information society, safety and security, innovation and growth, measurements and standards, and nuclear safety and security.

  1. The JRC has developed and manages the European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting Systems, ECCAIRS for the collection and exchange of accident and incident information in the aviation domain.

  2. Energy efficiency research at the JRC focuses on technology deployment and market uptake, and encompasses a broad range of activities which includes the Green Light Programme, the GreenBuildings project, the lighting initiative, the Covenant of Mayors and the Motor Challenge Programme

  3. The JRC supports the European Commission in its effort to improve maritime safety and security by developing systems to improve maritime surveillance capabilities and to collect information about maritime accidents.

  4. The JRC, together with the European Railways Agency (ERA), has developed the European Railway Accident Information Links (ERAIL) system, where all railway accident reports and the biannual safety performance indicators of the Member States are recorded, according to Directive 2004/49/EC.

  5. The JRC has been successfully involved in the design and implementation of the digital tachograph, which became mandatory in 2006 on all newly registered commercial trucks and buses across the EU.

  6. SESAMONET is a secure and safe mobility network developed (patent pending) by the JRC to improve and increase the mobility of visually impaired people.

  7. Today in the world millions of shipping containers constantly travel and cross national borders. Cargo containers are considered as a weak link in the supply chain as they can be potentially exploited to defraud customs, introduce illicit cargo and breach security protocols.. Within this context, a number of national and international programmes .and agreements have been drafted to limit the potential for miss-use of intermodal containers.

  8. The JRC is supporting the EU transport safety policy in all transport modes: road, aviation, maritime and rail. Research activities include the development and management of accidents and incidents reporting systems for the aviation, maritime and railways domains, assuring the security and trustworthiness of the digital tachograph, developing innovative radar systems for maritime surveillance and safety and innovative solutions to enhance the security of containers.
