JRC research topics

The JRC carries out research in a wide variety of fields. Located across five sites throughout the EU, seven research institutes work in the areas of agriculture and food security, energy and transport, environment and climate change, health and consumer protection, information society, safety and security, innovation and growth, measurements and standards, and nuclear safety and security.

  1. The JRC has developed and manages the European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting Systems, ECCAIRS for the collection and exchange of accident and incident information in the aviation domain.

  2. Aviation security refers to the prevention of acts of unlawful interference against civil aviation, such as seizure of an aircraft or placing a hazardous device onboard an aircraft. The JRC contributes to aviation security by providing scientific and technical support and advice to policy makers on aspects of measurements, testing and standardisation.

  3. The JRC aims to provide independent scientific advice related to the production and use of biofuels.

    The JRC’s scientific activities on bioenergy and biofuels span from a vast array of analyses in different areas to the testing of the biofuels sustainability. It includes topics such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emission savings, direct and indirect effects of land-use change, the overall availability of other primary energy sources or the most suitable and efficient production and transformation technologies.

  4. Energy efficiency research at the JRC focuses on technology deployment and market uptake, and encompasses a broad range of activities which includes the Green Light Programme, the GreenBuildings project, the lighting initiative, the Covenant of Mayors and the Motor Challenge Programme

  5. The JRC's research in the area of Energy sector economic analysis supports the EU's Sustainable Development Strategy, and includes impact analysis studies and modelling and reference data.

  6. The JRC aims to provide a solid and comprehensive understanding of energy security in support of EU policy, notably in relation to fossil fuels (mainly gas and oil) and power systems.

  7. The EU currently depends on – mostly imported – fossil fuels for 80% of its energy needs, which is problematic in relation to climate change as well as security of energy supply. There is thus an urgent need for energy technology innovation with high performing, innovative, low carbon and cost-effective technologies so that the energy system of today can transform in order to establish energy sustainability, competitiveness and security by 2020 and beyond.

  8. Hydrogen is the simplest and lightest gas in the universe. It is not a primary energy source, such as coal or gas, but it is an energy carrier (similar to electricity) and can store and deliver energy in a widely usable form. It also has important environmental and energy security advantages. When renewable energy is used for its production, or when the CO2 is captured, the hydrogen chain (from production to end-use) is completely emission-free. The JRC investigates the safety and storage aspects related to the deployment of hydrogen technologies and evaluates these in the best interest of Europe’s citizens.

  9. The JRC looks into interoperability issues between the electric vehicles and the charging infrastructure, covering hardware and information exchange protocols. Research on e-mobility refers to clean and efficient transport, using electric vehicles, powered either by batteries or by hydrogen fuel cells.

  10. The JRC supports the European Commission in its effort to improve maritime safety and security by developing systems to improve maritime surveillance capabilities and to collect information about maritime accidents.
