We are doing science for policy
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
The JRC, together with the European Railways Agency (ERA), has developed the European Railway Accident Information Links (ERAIL) system, where all railway accident reports and the biannual safety performance indicators of the Member States are recorded, according to Directive 2004/49/EC.
Member State’s investigation bodies are required to notify ERA of accident investigations and to submit copies of the accident investigation report when complete. In addition common safety indicators (CSIs) are to be collected by the national safety authorities and delivered to the Agency.
The ERAIL system, managed by ERA, is built on top of the ECCAIRS Common Framework (ECF), a software platform developed by the JRC for reporting and sharing accident and incident reports.
