We are doing science for policy
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission's science and knowledge service which employs scientists to carry out research in order to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy.
The Food Contact Materials (FCM) laboratory develops guidelines and tools for the implementation of legislation, performs pre-normative research on materials, kitchenware, ceramics, recycled plastics and studies on non-harmonised materials.
The Food Safety & Compliance (FSC) laboratory is the analytical facility supporting food and feed safety and compliance policies.
The FSC lab forms an integrated analytical platform covering different life sciences areas. It is equippe state-of-the-art instrumentation and equipment for the identification and quantification of main components or trace contaminants present in food and feed.
The Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) Laboratory is supporting the harmonisation of the implementation of GMO legislation and official controls.
It is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for the analysis of DNA and includes areas dedicated to the extraction of DNA from test samples, qPCR and digital PCR for DNA measurements and DNA sequencing.
The JRC's High Performance Computing facility (HPC) hosts several computing platforms to support the analysis of the growing volume of data, e.g. as generated by the NGS-Bioinformatics infrastructure.
