Atmospheric Observatory

The JRC runs the European Commission Atmospheric Observatory for air pollution research, contributing to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe's European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (UNECE-EMEP).

The JRC's European Crisis Management Laboratory carries out research across a diverse range of areas including intentional threats, natural disasters and health crises, using ICT focused solutions which integrate devices, applications, and crisis management related information sources.

The JRC's European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA) carries out research in the area of improving safety in construction using a custom built reaction wall.

ERLAP is giving scientific and technical support to the implementation of air quality policy regarding measurements of air pollution. It deals with the organisation of quality assurance programmes for the member states laboratories and develops and validates innovative measurement techniques.

The JRC's European Solar Test Installation carries out research on reliable and accurate measurements for photovoltaic devices and supports the EU in meeting its targets for renewable energy.

Specialised research laboratory supporting remote sensing ocean colour calibration and validation activities through the absolute calibration of passive and active optical instruments, the determination of the inherent optical properties of sea water constituents and the quantification of relevant phytoplankton pigment concentrations.

The Molecular Ecotoxicology and Microbiology is an environmental  molecular biology lab focussed on the implementation of innovative technologies to  forefront  the policy need in medium and long term perspectives.

The REM action is to support the EC in collecting, validating and reporting information on the radiological situation of Europe's environment, in view of providing qualified information to policy makers and the public, as well as to the scientific community for further research.

WISL hosts specialized analytical equipment for environmental chemical analysis of priority pollutants and compounds of emerging concern with special focus on the natural and urban water cycles. The lab is used to assessment both the chemical status of water bodies as well as technology for water purification.
