Laboratories & facilities

  1. The JRC's European Crisis Management Laboratory carries out research across a diverse range of areas including intentional threats, natural disasters and health crises, using ICT focused solutions which integrate devices, applications, and crisis management related information sources.

The European Interoperability Centre for Electric Vehicles and Smart Grids combines four new, state-of-the-art laboratories, which bring together knowledge and test facilities in the areas of efficiency, hybrid exhaust emissions, electromagnetic compatibility, smart grids and battery testing. The European centre establishes a transatlantic bridge with its partner facility at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory.

  3. The JRC's European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA) carries out research in the area of improving safety in construction using a custom built reaction wall.

  4. The JRC's European Microwave Signature Laboratory carries out research in the field of radar remote sensing and Radio Frequency compatibility.

  5. The European Nuclear Security Training Centre (EUSECTRA) instructs front-line officers, trainers and experts on how to detect and respond to illicit trafficking of nuclear or other radioactive materials. EUSECTRA offers hands-on training using a wide variety of radioactive and nuclear materials and a broad selection of equipment and measurement instruments. Indoors, one of the training areas simulates airport conditions, equipped with a pedestrian portal monitor and an x-ray conveyor.

  6. The JRC's Hopkinson Bar facility tests large material samples or structural components and sub-assemblies under dynamic conditions.
