Since the beginning of the financial crisis the European Commission has made several propositions to help tackle two pressing challenges: the need to simultaneously restore financial stability and boost economic growth. The JRC develops scientific models and methods to assist the Commission and EU member states in taking informed policy decisions in these fields. (November 2012)
Climate change is expected to have significant impacts on natural resources, the world economy and human well-being in general. It will lead to increased temperatures, changed precipitation patterns, rising sea levels, and increased frequencies of extreme weather events such as floods and droughts. (November 2012)

This industry sector focuses on measuring, preventing, limiting or correcting environmental damage to water, air, soil and ecosystems, and works with renewable energy, energy efficiency and waste. The report is a thorough review of a JRC organised conference of September 2011, which addressed the role of scientific support to policy making on EU level and beyond in providing access to food for all across the globe in a sustainable way. The conclusions included considerations on the necessity of investing in science and innovation, more strategic and interdisciplinary approach and new global governance for food security.
