Agricultural land covers almost half of Europe’s territory. Technological development, mechanisation, agro-chemicals and genetic research have led to structural modifications in farming practices and put pressure on the environment, leading to soil depletion, water shortages, pollution, habitat degradation and biodiversity loss.
JRC research in the area of agricultural technological innovation includes anticipation and technological foresight on new technological areas relevant for agriculture, notably in the area of plant and animal breeding.
The JRC provides essential support to policy for improving air quality, including initiatives to harmonise air quality monitoring processes and to develop integrated greenhouse gas and air pollutant emission inventories and projections. This knowledge serves as the basis for analysing the cost estimates of different policy options.
The JRC is developing and testing new animal-free methods, alternative to animal-based tests, to be applied in an integrated safety assessment of chemicals, as well as providing informatics tools and databases to support this.
The JRC has developed and manages the European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting Systems, ECCAIRS for the collection and exchange of accident and incident information in the aviation domain.
