The JRC can recruit individuals on a temporary basis using the following contractual possibilities:
Contract Staff members
The recruitment of Contract Staff members dealing with scientific and/or administrative tasks is organised through open competitions by the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) . The JRC can recruit Contract Staff members in the four Function Groups (IV, III, II and I). For Function Groups IV, III and II, a short-term contract up to the maximum of 6 years can be offered. For Function Group I, an indeterminate contract can be offered.

Seconded National Experts
In order to allow the Commission to benefit from a high level of professional knowledge and experience, in particular in areas where such expertise is not readily available in-house, it can recruit Seconded National Experts (SNEs) for a defined period of time as stated in the Commission Decision . SNEs are staff employed by a national, regional or local public administration or an IGO.

The aims of the traineeship scheme are to enable students or recent graduates to practise what they have acquired during their studies; to experience the professional world; and to gain a first hand experience of the workings of the JRC, and of the European Commission, in general. There are three types of traineeships:
- training related to the preparation of a thesis for a university degree;
- training after university education (or its equivalent);
- industrial placement.
