As the science and knowledge service of the European Commission, the Joint Research Centre's mission is to support EU policies with independent evidence throughout the whole policy cycle.
The JRC and the Slovak Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport are hosting a high level conference discussing research cooperation between the JRC and Slovakia today in Bratislava, with the participation of Dušan Čaplovič, Slovak Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport and Vladimír Šucha, JRC Director-General.
The objective of the meeting is to strengthen cooperation in strategic areas which could bring added value to Slovak science as well as help integrate it even better within the European Research Area. The partners are additionally looking into areas where cooperation between the JRC and the Slovak Republic will be complementary to the objectives of the national strategy "Through knowledge towards prosperity - Research Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialisation of the Slovak Republic (RIS3 SK)".
A special focus is dedicated to integrating business and in particular Slovak industry in the discussions. The event explores opportunities for strengthening cooperation with business and educational institutions in view of supporting a well-functioning knowledge triangle, increasing effectiveness and attractiveness of investment in R&D and enhancing the innovation capacity of the Slovak economy. The partners will build on the traditional strengths of Slovak Republic's research and innovation system, such as highly qualified human resources and the ability to attract business R&D investment from abroad.
The main topics discussed at the two thematic round tables are sustainable transport, fuels and technologies as well as nuclear safety and nuclear decommissioning. Event organisers hope to stimulate debate and improve the science-based understanding of the challenges for the automotive industry, nuclear safety and nuclear decommissioning.
