Giulio Cotogno is qualified as a biomedical engineer having received his masters degree in 2002 from the Politecnico di Milano (Italy). His master's thesis was prepared on the characterization of hip prosthesis wear debris during a one-year experience as a trainee at the JRC (Ispra). In 2003, after his graduation, he started his career at the JRC working on the wear properties of functionally graded biomaterials for Total Joint Replacements (TJR). Over the years he has extended his areas of competence into new fields of activity such as the production of radio-isotopes for research and cancer diagnosis where he was active as both Cyclotron operator and field engineer. He has been involved in the design and maintenance of the ISO 9001 quality management system as Unit quality manager. He has been an official of the European Commission since 2010.
Today he is responsible for the sub-sampling facility of the JRC Nanomaterials Repository, a laboratory that he has contributed to design and build up. Recently, he has also joined the team of the surface analysis laboratory as operator of several advanced analytical instruments including x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the time-of-flight secondary-ion-mass-spectrometry (ToF-SIMS).
