In recent years, the realization that tertiary education is part and parcel of a country’s competitive advantage, together with the impetus given by the global rankings, have provoked a radical change in the way governments consider the role and importance of universities. Preliminary results of this work show clearly that the most successful institutions are those that have managed to align the three main components of excellence, namely critical masses of talent, abundant resources, and appropriate governance, the latter being perhaps the most critical level of rapid change.

The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between cultural access and individual psychological well-being, in order to provide a possible estimation of the impact of cultural participation upon subjective perceptions of well-being.

To better guide policy decision-making on mitigating the risk of climate change, novel and interdisciplinary approaches are required, which involve a dialogue between scientists from different communities (e.g., climate and impact modelling) and stakeholders to share data and knowledge. Credible and meaningful metrics need to be developed that can help quantifying risks related to physical climate change.

In the context of the European Semester and “The Role of Culture” event on 15-16 April 2015 in Lisbon, the JRC has been invited to discuss the ongoing work on the development of a monitoring tool, the Cultural and Creative Cities Index (working name). The Index is the result of a convergence of interests of several stakeholders and the European Commission to establish a common evidence-base for understanding and monitoring cultural and creative initiatives and assessing their social and economic impact in cities milieu.
