    The theme of the 2009 AAAS Meeting is "Our Planet and Its Life: Origins and Futures" recognizes that 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. New understanding of the processes that fascinated Darwin continues to be the focus of intense research 150 years later.

    The Monitoring Agricultural Resources (MARS) Unit of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability is organising a workshop on agroecology and ecological intensification for a sustainable food future, which will be held at the EXPO site in Milan and at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra.

    The workshop aims to discuss the role of agroecology and ecological intensification in EU agriculture.

    The Annual Congress of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine is one of the largest annual events in the field of nuclear medicine. This year, cardiology, oncology and infection will be the main foci of the scientific programme. However, other areas will be addressed as well, including the role of the new hybrid equipment and the present status of nuclear medicine therapy.

    The 2015 Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty will take place 23 – 27 March 2015 at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington D.C., with the theme ‘Linking Land Tenure and Use for Shared Prosperity’.  The use of satellite imagery and geographic information systems has garnered special attention. Within the session on ‘Using geospatial data to improve land use and tenure’, JRC scientist Alan Belward will present a paper describing the role of the EU’s Earth Observation programme Copernicus as a means of obtaining and distributing land use information.

    Within the framework of the EC support program to the IAEA, a practical exercise on Complementary Access (CA) is provided to IAEA Safeguard Inspectors.

    This CA exercise takes place under the aegis of the European Nuclear Security Training Centre (EUSECTRA), an EC initiative to provide training in the field of nuclear security and safeguards to EC Members States, beneficiary countries of EC foreign support program and international partners.

    The Arctic Biodiversity Congress, organised by the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working group of the Arctic Council and the Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet), aims to promote the conservation and sustainable use of Arctic biodiversity through dialogue among scientists, policy-makers, government officials, industry, civil society and indigenous peoples.
