This workshop, which will be held on the JRC-Ispra site, will address issues regarding how local/regional modelling results can be upscaled (or applied) to the European scale. The workshop also serves as a follow-up of recent JRC modelling developments and published maps on soil erosion by water and wind. The workshop will focus on how various project or local/regional modelling applications can improve “know-how” at the European scale. Emphasis will also be given to management practices that can reduce soil erosion.

JRC scientist and Chair of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) Luca Montanarella will give a presentation as part of the Lunchtime Conference External Cooperation Infopoint on Voluntary Guidelines for Soil Sustainable Management - Why is it important? How can we promote them in the EU cooperation activities and inside the EU?

This last plenary meeting (21-23 February) will be combined with a day centred around policy, on 24 February

The last plenary project meeting of the CASCADE (CAtastrophic Shifts in drylands: how CAn we prevent ecosystem DEgradation?) project (the project period runs until end June 2017) will held in Matera (Italy) from 21-23 February, with a day centred around policy on 24 February 2017. Key policymakers from EU and other European organisations will participate in the policy forum.

This European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action aims to promote coordination and collaboration between researchers and risk managers to identify common strategies at European level to deal with health issues around industrial contaminated sites more systematically. The final aim is to elaborate guidance documents on how to assess the health risks and health impacts around industrial contaminated sites, methods and tools for exposure assessment and risk management and communication.

At the plenary meeting of the European Land and Soil Alliance (ELSA), representatives of the European Commission, the German, Austrian and Italiy governments will discuss  the impact of the International Year of Soils (2015) in raising awareness of the importance of soils, which intiatives should be promoted and how, the status of soil protection in Europe, exchange of experience and best practices.

At 20:30, as part of the events held to mark the International Year of Soils (2015) and his role as Chairman of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS), IES scientist Luca Montanarella will speak of the urgent need to ensure soil quality in order to produce enough safe food to sustain a growing population in a session entitled 'À la base de l’alimentation : le rôle des sols dans la sécurité alimentaire'.
