At 20:30, as part of the events held to mark the International Year of Soils (2015) and his role as Chairman of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS), IES scientist Luca Montanarella will speak of the urgent need to ensure soil quality in order to produce enough safe food to sustain a growing population in a session entitled 'À la base de l’alimentation : le rôle des sols dans la sécurité alimentaire'.

The IPC Food Security Working Group will work with the IPC Nutrition Working Group (IPC NWG) to capture cross-cutting lessons learned to prepare and develop a consolidated, articulated, and harmonized Integrated Food and Nutrition Security Phase Classification System that consists of the three IPC Classification scales (IPC Acute Food Insecurity, IPC Acute Malnutrition, and IPC Chronic Food Insecurity).

This year's British Ecological Society (BES) annual meeting will be held in Edinburgh from 13 to 16 December. 

The oldest ecological society in the world, the BES runs several major scientific meetings for ecologists each year. The Annual Meeting currently attracts 800 delegates each year, and provides the opportunity for ecologists to present papers and posters on a wide variety of topics. It is Europe’s largest annual meeting of ecologists and supports a range of other specialist meetings, workshops, training events and field meetings.

The European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC) is built upon the principles of sustainability, continuity and the transparent inclusion of experts and stakeholders to develop a project that will have an impact on breast cancer care in Europe. The ECIBC is under the coordination of the Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), based on an agreement with the Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety. It aims to ensure and harmonise the quality of breast cancer services across European countries.

The French version of the JRC's Soil Atlas of Africa will be officially launched at the conference on 4 December 2015

The IES has co-organised a high-level African soil event which will be held in the University of Leuven (KUL) in Belgium on 4 and 5 December. The event will mark the launch of the French edition of the Soil Atlas of Africa, and the launch of a striking six week 'Africa in Profile' exhibition which will be open in the cloister of the University of Leuven (KUL) from 4 December 2015 - 29 January 2016.
