The Eye on Earth Summit is the first global summit dedicated exclusively to the issue of environmental and societal data access. Organised in Abu Dhabi under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and hosted by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Summit will be held on 12-15 December 2011.

On 5 and 6 December, the European Commission is holding its first Innovation Convention following the adoption of the Innovation Union Flagship initiative in October 2010. This conference will gather over 1200 participants involved in the innovation chain, including high-level policy makers, leading CEOs, deans of universities and research centres, bankers, venture capitalists, top researchers and innovators.

On 29th of November 2011 a workshop was organised on the "Sensory science for food contact materials safety". The scope of this workshop was to give an overview of the state of the art of sensory testing in the framework of Article 3 of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 that states that food contact materials should not change the sensory properties of the food. The implementation of this article is hindered by the lack of guidance on methodologies adequately covering the testing of compliance of this article.

The fifth conference on the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan), the technology pillar for EU’s energy and climate change policy since 2007, will be held from 28 to 29 November in Warsaw. Held under the EU Polish Presidency, the conference is co-organised by the European Commission and Polish national bodies and ministries.

The workshop aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the dynamical aspects of nuclear fission and their consequences on the fission fragment properties. Contributions should highlight the advancement in gamma-spectrometry with a particular focus on prompt gamma rays. In order to enhance the workshops’ potential for high-quality networking, experts are invited to attend and participation of post doctoral fellows and PhD students who wish to present their work is encouraged.

On 22 November the JRC Institute for Energy and Transport (IET) and the Dutch Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the High Flux Reactor (HFR) in Petten, and 50 years of research co-operation between the European Commission and the Netherlands. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, as well as Maxime Verhagen, the Vice Prime Minister of the Netherlands joined the event along with policy makers and researchers.

European and American policymakers, researchers and industry representatives on Monday 21 November discussed closer scientific co-operation in support of clean energy and sustainable mobility. The high level Brussels-held seminar was jointly organised by the JRC and the US Mission to the European Union. Titled ‘Building a Transatlantic Scientific Bridge’, it was timely scheduled ahead of next week’s two key events: the US-EU summit and the Transatlantic Economic Council in Washington, which will feature science and electro-mobility high on the co-operation agenda.

In the frame of the Europe and Metrology in Turkey project, Dr. Ralf-Peter Kapsch (PTB), Dr. Achim Krauss (PTB) and Dr. Doğan Yasar (TAEK-CNAEM) will give three lectures on dosimetry for radiation therapy. Additionally four lectures and poster presentations will be given by TAEK-CNAEM staff.
