    The 17th International Symposium on Landscape Ecology, organised by the Institute of Landscape Ecology, Slovak Ecological Society and Constantine the Philosopher University, will be held in Nitra, Slovakia, from 27-29 May 2015.

    This symposium aims to explore the current concepts and trends in landscape ecology and the links to other landscape-related issues.

    JRC scientist Peter Vogt will give an oral presentation on latest JRC-research on landscape fragmentation assessment schemes.

    The 20th Latin American Congress of Soil Science, be organised by the Latin American Soil Science Society (SLCS) and the Peruvian Soil Science Society (SPCS), will be held in Cuzco, Peru, from 9-15 November 2014. The Congress aims to be a platform for scientific and cultural exchanges between researchers, teachers, students, professionals and anyone interested in the conservation of soil and water in Latin America.


    The JRC plans to present the new Soil Atlas of Latin America at this event.

    The World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS) has been held on a quadrennial basis since 1927 as a scientific meeting in the area of soil science. the 20th WCSS is expected to gather over 2 500 participants, from science and industry, from more than 100 countries around the world. A wide range of scientific programs and stimulating social activities will be organised under the theme, “Soils Embrace Life and Universe”. The JRC plans to have a stand at the congress.

    Organised by ADEME (Direction villes et territoires durables (DVTD) - Service friches urbaines et sites pollués (SFUSP)), this meeting brings together the researchers and managers of contaminated sites to discuss the problem of pollution from industry and agriculture and present the progress made over the past five years.

    IES scientist Ana Paya Perez will present the progress made in the management of contaminated sites in Europe, and research projects related to this subject.

    The theme of the 2009 AAAS Meeting is "Our Planet and Its Life: Origins and Futures" recognizes that 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. New understanding of the processes that fascinated Darwin continues to be the focus of intense research 150 years later.

    The 2015 Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty will take place 23 – 27 March 2015 at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington D.C., with the theme ‘Linking Land Tenure and Use for Shared Prosperity’.  The use of satellite imagery and geographic information systems has garnered special attention. Within the session on ‘Using geospatial data to improve land use and tenure’, JRC scientist Alan Belward will present a paper describing the role of the EU’s Earth Observation programme Copernicus as a means of obtaining and distributing land use information.

    The European Commission will host a high-level public conference on 'Land as a resource' in Brussels on 19 June 2014, with the objective of highlighting the importance of good land management to address European and global challenges, particularly in view of an increasing world population. It will also tackle the shortcomings of the current European land use model, including conflicting policy drivers.

    The conference will be opened by Janez Potočnik, Environment Commissioner, with a key-note speech by Lester E. Brown, Director of the Earth Policy Institute (Washington, D.C.).

    The 10th Conference of the Parties (COP-10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity started today in Nagoya, Japan. At the two-week long meeting the international community, including the EU, will be striving to agree on a post-2010 policy framework for preserving biodiversity. Scientists from the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) are taking part in this event to present their findings on soil biodiversity as well as on forest fragmentation and green infrastructure. € 3.3 billion invested in Europe in R&D on low carbon technologies

    This, the ninth edition of European Development Days, will be held in Brussels from 3-4 June 2015. 2015 is the European Year for Development (EYD2015) and European Development Days (EDD15) will be its flagship event. The focus for EDD15, organised by DG DEVCO, echoes the motto of the European Year for Development - ‘Our world, our dignity, our future’. This year’s programme will be structured around 4 themes and 12 topics.
