    The 18th European biomass conference & exhibition, which took place in Lyon, France from 3 to 7 May, covered the entire range of bioenergy issues: resource availability, conversion technologies, demonstration projects, integration in the energy system, environmental impact and market deployment as well as the need for policy actions. The JRC Institute for Energy (IE) coordinated the technical programme of the event, which attracted more than 1000 delegates from 70 countries.

    The 24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (EU PVSEC 2009) is underway in Hamburg Germany, attended by some 4,000 participants from 73 countries. The accompanying industry exhibition boasts over 900 exhibitors presenting new ideas and technical solutions in the field of photovoltaics and is expected to attract more than 40,000 visitors.

    On Monday 23/6 the official start of the Dutch Solar boat race will take place. The event will be opened by the Dutch Minister Maria van der Hoeven, and Dutch astronaut Wubbo Ockels. The 49 Solar powered boats will follow the route of the Frisian Eleven Cities Skating Race and will end on Saturday 28/6 in Leeuwarden.

Within eight years the combination of trade fair and congress has become Europe's leading event for geothermal energy. This is where the dynamics and quality standards of shallow and deep geothermal energy can enjoy a perfect setting. Our IET colleagues, Andreas Uihlein and Bergur Sigfusson, will be giving a presentation and promoting JRC's latest report "JRC Geothermal Energy Status Report 2014".
